Travel eSIM FAQ


It is highly recommended to activate your eSIM on the same date as your flight departure, where there is internet connection available.
(Ensure your device has Wi-Fi or alternative Internet connection to scan your eSIM QR code. You may also need to restart your mobile device upon arriving at your destination.)

  • Please take note that the QR codes must be scanned within 60 days of purchase and Travel eSIMs will be activated once the QR code is scanned.
  • Majority of the countries for Changi Travel eSIMs’ data usage follows a 24-hour period format & the time of activation (except for Thailand & Vietnam eSIM plans, where it is based on based on the day of activation instead)
e.g. A 1-day Thailand or Vietnam eSIM’s validity starts from 0000hr to 2359hr only.
An eSIM activation at 1400hr would allow the user to have data connection until 2359hr on the same day.
Depending on the device model and internet speed, activation for eSIMs may typically take up to 30 minutes. Please ensure a stable connection for a smooth activation process.

    • Scan the QR code below from your computer or;
    • Screenshot the code from your confirmation email & open the image through your QR code scanner.

  • General setup guide for eSIM (depending on your mobile device)
    • Go to your mobile "Settings"
    • Click on "SIM card Manager/Cellular"
    • Click on "Add Mobile Plan / Add eSIM"
    • Scan the QR Code from your device/computer or another device's screen.
    • Upon arriving at your destination, please turn on “Data Roaming” & turn off your local telco SIM (to avoid telco's roaming charges) - switch to Travel eSIM for data usage.

These messages are normally seen before reaching your destination. As the eSIM purchased is meant for use in the intended country, it will be considered as fully activated once a proper connection is made with the country’s network upon arrival.
Data Roaming function can be turned on after arriving at your destination to ensure seamless connectivity. Please remember to turn off your local telco's SIM to avoid roaming charges on your personal line & switch to Travel eSIM for data usage.
It is not advisable to preset your APN prior to your arrival. If required, updating APN settings upon arrival would be recommended, so as to ensure a more proper connection is established.
Majority of the countries for Changi Travel eSIMs’ data usage follows a 24-hour period format & the time of activation.

For example, your 4-day Japan eSIM plan will last for exactly 4 days from the moment it's activated, following the 24-hour period format. If you activate your eSIM at 1:33pm on 1 Jan 2024, it will expire at 1:32pm on 5 Jan 2024.

However, only Thailand and Vietnam’s eSIM plans have a daily resetting at 00:00 Hrs (midnight), regardless of the time zone. The expiration time is calculated based on the day of activation, not on the specific time of activation.

For instance, if you activate your 3-day Thailand eSIM at 2:30pm on 1 Jan 2024, it will end at 11:59pm on 3rd Jan 2024, regardless of the time zone. I.e. It is not a full 72 hours usage (starting from the day of activation, no matter the time it was activated).
Yes, you can use your eSIM to hotspot, as long as your mobile device supports this function.
As our eSIMs only provide data, sending & receiving SMS text are not available functions.
No, one eSIM can only be activated on one device once and cannot be used on another device once activation has been done.
To remove an eSIM from your phone:
  • Go to your phone’s “Settings”
  • Click on “Connections”.
  • Select “SIM Card Manager/Cellular *”
  • Tap on the eSIM
  • Select “Remove Mobile Data/Cellular Plan”

eSIMs can only be added & activated once. Once removed from your mobile device, the eSIM will no longer be valid for use. To save on data usage, it is recommended to have a temporary disable or pause on the eSIM when it is not needed for usage. However, once activated, the eSIM’s package validity will not stop.
You may want to remove your eSIM when:
  • The data package of the eSIM has passed validity period.
    The eSIM has a specific valid duration of use. The validity is depending on the data package you have purchased.
  • You do not require using the eSIM anymore.
    If you no longer plan to use the eSIM for further usage.
    Note: eSIMs can only be activated & used once. i.e cannot be reactivated again.
  • You have finished your travels and/or in another country.
    As the eSIM’s data package is based on your selected country of intended usage, it cannot be used in any other country.

  • Please key in your eSIM ICCID number & click submit.
    This can be found under your eSIM QR code in your email sent upon purchase.
  • At the data enquiry page, you will see:

    Activation Time: Refers to the time of eSIM activation when it is scanned.
    Usage (MB): Refers to amount of data used with the eSIM.

Please note that certain areas may not have 5G coverage.
In such instances, your connection will switch to 4G/a lower bandwidth;
It will automatically reconnect to 5G data*, once in a 5G-covered area.

*5G data speed is only applicable for 5G-enabled mobile devices. Additionally, older mobile models may not perform at the desired speed, as compared to newer ones.
Data usage that is shown on your mobile device (more for iOS models) may differ from eSIM data tracking due to a 24-hour delay in your device's reflection of data usage. Changi Travel eSIM is able to provide accurate real-time data tracking, please click here to track your data.
While eSIMs data packages have wide Internet coverage for the country selected, please note that the data signals might not be as strong when at coastal areas.
e.g. Osaka & Hokkaido coastal areas.
The QR code for an eSIM is only valid for 60 days from the date of purchase. Please note that it can only be scanned once, for activation on a single mobile device*.

It is recommended to:
  • purchase the eSIM closer to your flight departure date &
  • activate the eSIM on the date of departure

A Travel eSIM is a virtual version of a physical SIM card. With most phones today having eSIM compatibility, simply scan a QR code to get instant data activation & connection on the spot.

  • For IOS devices, go to your mobile device’s:
    - “Settings” > “Mobile Service / Cellular” > “Add eSIM”.
  • For Android devices, go to your mobile device’s:
    - “Settings” > “Connections/Mobile Network” > “SIM Management” > “Add eSIM”.

If the “Add eSIM” feature is shown, your device is eSIM compatible.

Alternatively, you may try keying in *#06# on your mobile's dial pad. If your device is eSIM compatible, you should see an EID number on the screen.

Note: not all mobile devices are able to use this shortcut method.
For all countries, usage duration for the eSIM purchased, starts as soon as the eSIM is installed & activated.
A Travel eSIM with an unlimited* data package consists of both a fixed amount of high-speed & endless lowered-speed data to use when travelling overseas (*subject to fair use policy).

Depending on the eSIM plan bought & activated, the data provided will start off with the high-speed data given per day. Afterwhich, the remaining endless data’s speed will be lowered down to 128kbps.

Example: Australia & New Zealand (2GB) High-speed daily, unlimited data for 3 days

  • The unlimited data package will consist of: 2GB of high-speed data per day & endless lowered-speed data (which will be switched to, after the initial 2GB high-speed data amount has been used up).
  • The 2GB high-speed data will reset each day, for 3 days.
